Junior Surf

About the Programme
Our junior surf lifesaving programme is for children aged 6 to 13. We foster confidence and safety in the surf and on the beaches. Participants will learn surf lifesaving techniques in the water, beach safety and fun beach carnival games.
The Junior Surf season runs from early December through till early March, every Saturday from 2:30-4:00pm.
Sessions are run by volunteer lifeguards and parents. To run Junior Surf we rely on the help of parents and caregivers to help with beach activities or joining a group in the water. Please note this is not a drop off session, a parent or guardian must accompany a child to the beach.

You must be a member of a surf lifesaving club first. Join Levin Waitarere surf lifesaving club by following the instructions on the SLSNZ website.

200 Metre Badge
The 200 metre badge is a safety requirement and must be earned in order to compete in water events at surf carnivals for ages 10-13. To earn a 200 metre badge a child must swim 200 metres and tread water for one minute all under 8 minutes, and then do a comparable swim in the ocean. Badges should be displayed on their club cap. Only juniors who have achieved their 200 metre badge may use the knee boards (this includes the red and yellow foam boards). No badge…… no kneeboard!
Holiday Programme
Our summer holiday programme is run in early January for children aged 7-13. The program is run by lifeguards for a week during the school holidays. Information on the 2027 programme will be released late 2026.
